Porto-Novo is the capital of the Republic of Benin. The city is home to the Honmey Museum, which was once the palace of King Toffa, the first to sign a Protectorate Treaty with the French, to protect himself from attacks by his rival from Abomey, King Behanzin. The Honmè or Honmey Museum is a Beninese museum housed in the palace of the former kings of Hogbonou, located in the Avassa district of Porto-Novo1, the country's capital. Honmè or Honmey means "inside the door," and by extension, the term refers to a palace2. Another museum, the Alexandre SENOU ADANDE Ethnographic Museum, is also located here.
